The sandy bottom, usually considered boring, can reserve interesting encounters as seahorses, here habitual and present in both species attested in Italy, Hyppocampus hyppocampus and Hyppocampus guttulatus.
It’s also common to meet different species of octopus (Octopus vulgaris and Octopus macropus) in their dens, fascinating flying gurnards (Dactylopterus volitans), big weever fish (Trachinus draco), numerous mullets (Mullus barbatus), camouflaged turbots (Bothus podas), and torpedoes and pearly razor fish (Xyrichthys novacula), locally called “surici”.
Depending on the season of the year, you can meet sea hares (Aplisya depilans), small barracuda (Sphyrena sphyrena) or large barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo).
The bottom is moreover animated by anemones, sea slugs and starfish. If you are lucky, you can meet and photograph pelagic fishes such as the sunfish (Mola mola) or the eagle-ray.

The Pasubio wreck is one of the most fascinating shipwreck of the southern Ionian coast of Calabria. It was a steamer 90 m long, torpedoed by a British submarine and sunk in 1943 off the coast of Roccella Jonica.
The wreck lies on the sandy bottom, 43 m deep, slightly skidded on the left flank; the ship’s superstructures begin at the depth of 34 m, while the big propeller is 42/43 m deep.
To reach the wreck's site, we sail 10 minutes by rubber boat, diving along the descent rope. One dive is not enough to explore the entire wreck and usually we plan two distinct dives: one from amidships to the bow and another one from mid-ship to the stern.

The archaeological area of the ancient greek city of Kaulon (or rather Kaulonia) lies near Punta Stilo, in the territory of the municipality of Monasterace Marina, along the Ionian coast of the province of Reggio Calabria. It is made up of both the Archaeological Park with a nice little Museum and the Archaeological Underwater Area in the sea section in front of the Park, where it’s possible to dive to see the underwater Archaeological Site of Kaulonia.
Over the centuries, due to a progressive phenomenon of coastal erosion and bradyseism, there has been a profound change in the coastline, which is backward compared to the age of the greek colony. According to recent geo-archaeological studies, it appears that the coastline in front of the Kaulonia city, in the Greek age, was about 300 m further to the east than the present, as well as being characterized by a slightly arched shape.

Locally known as Kingstown or Kingdom, the wreck of this Swedish shipyard lies today on the sandy backdrop of the Guardavalle coast (CZ). The ship, about 72 m long, was launched in 1965 under the name of Frigg and changed name several times to the name of Marineta in 1990 (owner Kasem Shipping Ltd. Kingstown).
It is with this name that on January 5, 1993, while sailing from Turkey to La Nouvelle with a cauldron cargo, he suffered a turmoil on the helm due to the bad weather, resulting in flooding of the engine room, and sank 4 miles North of Punta Stilo.

It was March 1942 when the great oceanic submarine of the Italian Navy “Admiral Millo” sank off the coast of Punta Stilo, torpedoed by the British submarine “Ultimatum” along the coastline of the southern Ionian sea, while was sailing on the sea surface towards the base of Taranto, during return from a mission near Malta. Only 15 sailors of the crew managed to save their lives, while 57 sailors still lie inside the submarine, which is a veritable memorial shrine. The dive on “Admiral Millo” Submarine Wreck is not a dive like the others… it’s a quiet visit to a holy place! The aura emanated by his tragic story – the last mission of the Millo and his torpedoing – drives the divers to get down here to honor those fallen, symbol of all who are dead at sea.

In Cannitello, in the narrowest point of the Strait of Messina, at a depth between 30 and 55 m, there’s a shipwreck known as “U Vapuri” and recently identified with the ship “Alvah”. It was a freighter carrying grain which, according to the fishermen stories, in a night of early 1900, collided with another boat and sank, while was trying to gain the Calabrian shore. The hull lies upside down on the steep sea bottom, divided into two parts, with the bow facing the shore 30 m deep and the stern at 55 m, where the propeller blades sprout from the sand.
Densely populated by fishes, the hull is fully covered by sponges, nudibranchs, huge starfishes and some species of coelenterates, especially abundant specimens of Leptosamia pruvoti, thanks to which the wreck has earned the definition of “yellow wreck”!

The “Rigoletto” is one of the most fascinating wrecks of the Strait of Messina. It was a factory ship with large cargo holds, 105 m long, sunk in the 50s near the Messina shore. It was carrying cars, which are easily visible even today in its holds. It’s impressive to see the large propeller blades, which stand out at 35 m against the blue background. Wreck full of life, encrusted by numerous benthic species (colored sponges, urchins, transparent sea squirts, starfish, sea slugs) and surrounded by dense shoals of various fish species. Congers and large moray eels are common meetings among the wreck crevices.

T’s one of the most spectacular, various and rich in biodiversity dive site of the “Costa Viola” (that means Violet Coast). We reach the site by boat, which usually stops in a small bay, on the beach of which is built a little church dedicated to St. Elias. The interior walls are covered with sponges, long-spined sea urchins (Centrostephanus longispinus) and yellow flower corals (Leptopsammia pruvoti), among which there are numerous nudibranchs. After getting out from this “gully-cave”, we are on the top of a vertical wall, that runs down up to over 60 m and it’s thickly covered by large purple gorgonian fans (Paramuricea clavata), as well as numerous species of colorful sponges, encrusting or branching. Everything is animated by shoals of pinkish Anthias anthias, plus the presence of two-banded seabreams, saddled breams and groupers.

In the stretch of sea off a beach in the northern outskirts of Reggio Calabria, in the locality known as “Archi”, a wide expanse of fine white sand is the home for a large number of invertebrates and fishes.
The site is ideal for both daily and night dives and never disappoints fans of underwater photography and of marine biology. What really excites the divers is the dense “prairie” of large spiral tube-worms (Sabella spallanzanii) that, from 5 m to 20-25 m depth, makes the bottom alive: isolated or collected in huge “bouquet”, these fascinating polychaete annelids, leave their tufts swaying and create “fireworks” on the bottom. Moreover, got used to the strong currents of the Strait of Messina, they don’t retract immediately their tufts during the passage of the divers, allowing them a good observation and to take many pictures.

It’s a small German barge, 50 m long, that sank during World War II, when was used for the coastal cabotage. There’s no certainty about the content of its load.
Now it lies on a sandy seabed, parallel to the beach, with the bow facing north 36 m deep and with the stern 44 m deep. Its state of conservation is very good and, thanks to its small size, we can explore it entirely from stem to stern in a single dive.
The wreck external structures are still intact and have a low level of colonization, which allows divers to recognize easily the various components of the structure. This wreck has a great photographic interest, in fact, its small size and the brightly light that penetrates from the surface allow divers to photograph it in all its extension.

The scenery outside is breathtaking, with high vertical rock walls, and the underwater environment doesn’t disappoint the expectations.
Looking up into the blue, often we can meet pelagic fishes, such as snappers (Dentex dentex), shoals of barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) and bonitos (Sarda sarda), in addition to large groupers (Epinephelus marginatus).
At around 30 m depth, there’s an imposing rocky spire, entirely covered with colorful sponges and large purple gorgonian fans (Paramuricea clavata), on whose branches there are dense colonies of transparent sea squirts (Clavelina lepadiformis). There are of course several species of nudibranchs and mollusks in general, in an immersion of high biological interest and of photographic interest, which doesn’t disappoint even the most demanding divers.

In Saline Ioniche, in the southern-Ionian Sea, with entry from a wide beach of gravel and sand, there’s a small cliff with vertical drops from 8 m to 15-20 m, with subsequent rocky descent, covered with a wide variety of algae and sponges. There are few, but very interesting invertebrates, including many species of shrimps, hidden in the cavities of the rock, tunicates, numerous species of starfishes and sea slugs. Among the latter, in addition to the common specimens of Flabellina affinis or Cratena peregrina, we may also meet with beautiful specimens of Umbraculum umbraculum. It’s frequent the meeting with a large clam shell, the Tonna Galea, often hidden in the sandy bottom. Very common even small serranids, especially specimens of dusky groupers and wreckfishes.
At shallow depths, under a rocky ravine, there’s a small statue of Jesus, now richly colonized by the local fauna.

Business card for the seabed of Scylla, this site has unique characteristics in the Mediterranean Sea and a benthos so colored to satisfy the more demanding divers.
We are in the realm of coelenterates, marine colonial invertebrates that have colored these waters to the point of making them comparable to tropical seas. Among these there’s a gorgonian, the Paramuricea clavata, that covers densely the walls of the main pinnacle; commonly red, here it’s present in its variant color yellow or bicolor. These thin out only in the upper half of the reef, where there are groups of Astroides calycularis and some Eunicella cavolinii. On the sandy plateau above the “Mountain” huge Cerianthus membranaceus show off their flashy white tentacles with luminescent ends.

    Torre dei Saraceni B&B description

Torre dei Saraceni B&B basic informations

The 1st category B&B “Torre dei Saraceni” is less than 100 meters from the beach, in a street of the promenade of Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, quiet and charming seaside town in the heart of the Riviera dei Gelsomini (ie Jasmines Coast), along the Ionian coast of the province of Reggio Calabria.

The resort offers one of the most beautiful and unspoiled coasts of Calabria, with a large beach made of fine sand and gravel mixed with pebbles.

In summer you can use the services of the many beach clubs set up on the beach and, for our guests who are interested, we offer advantageous agreements, not only for the umbrellas and deck chairs, but also for the restaurant service.

The structure of the B&B is located on the first floor of a modern building and consists of 3 double or triple rooms with private bathrooms, plus a two-rooms apartment with double bedroom, bathroom and kitchen-living room with 2 beds, ideal for a family or a group of friends!
